Did you hear of Nike’s current CEO who started with them as an intern 36 years ago? If you didn’t, that’s the trendy corporate news!
The journey from intern to CEO is no small feat, but today I’ve got some tips to help you take over that career ladder, one rung at a time.

1. Accept your reality
Look, not everyone gets to the top, and it’s not just a Nigerian thing. It’s global. In fact, less than 1% of people ever reach that CEO status, according to my highly scientific research. But hey, don’t let that get you down—you could be part of that rare breed!
2. Understand your company
Here’s the tea: You’ll know if you’re going to grow in your current company during the interview—or at least when you’re on the inside. If you notice people have been stuck in the same role for five years with zero progression, that’s your cue. Chances are you won’t be moving up to the director seat, let alone CEO.
3. Work smart, not just hard
There’s a fine line between working hard and working smart. Be loud (unapologetically) about your contributions—let the managers and the world know what you’re doing! Opportunities often go to those who make their impact visible. So, don’t be shy about it! Also, have strong foundational skills, you can read more about that here.
4. Build good skills
But hey, don’t just be loud without the goods to back it up. Make sure you’re honing your skills and staying consistent. Sharpen those tools in your career toolbox! Talking of building skills, check how to sell through storytelling here.
5. Know when to leave
If a place isn’t serving you, don’t get too cozy. Know when it’s time to bounce and look for fresh, exciting opportunities.
