Somalia marks a turning point with the launch of its first 5G network, a significant leap forward as the country rebuilds its economy. This initiative, spearheaded by Hormuud Telecom Somalia, the nation’s largest telecom provider, promises not only faster internet speeds but also a symbol of progress and integration into the East African Community (EAC).
“This is more than just technology,” declared Somalia’s Telecommunications Minister Jama Hassan Khalif. “It’s a commitment to growth and a brighter future.”

Somalia’s mobile money sector plays a crucial role, especially for those without traditional banking access. The introduction of 5G is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and security of these financial transactions.
Somalia’s accession to the EAC in March 2023 marked the culmination of a long journey. Decades of civil war had hampered regional integration. Now, with active participation in the EAC on the horizon, a robust digital infrastructure becomes even more critical for fostering cross-border collaboration and economic prosperity.
