MTN Group, Africa’s biggest telecom operator by subscription has been in conversation regarding exiting 3 African countries since 2023; Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, and Liberia.

Though reasons for the exit were not disclosed, the data shows they have been facing a lot of challenges in these African countries which include losses.

It has now been confirmed in an undisclosed offering conversation with Telecel that MTN has sold its share in MTN Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry, exiting the small markets in WECA.

This sale has been confirmed by a spokesperson for the telco while holding on to the exact price these shares went for.

“Telecel, an established telecoms operator with a significant presence in Africa, is well positioned to drive the growth and further development of these operations and contribute to technological and economic progress in these markets,” a note in its financials said.

With this exit, MTN gets to focus more and invest more into its other existing WECA regions which are now 6 with a possible exit in Liberia.
