ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has discontinued its LetsChat messaging platform in Africa. The shutdown took effect on March 23, 2024, following the app’s removal from app stores on February 26, 2024.

LetsChat, launched in March 2021, aimed to compete with established messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram by offering data-efficient messaging, free voice and video calls, and even in-app games. ByteDance invested significantly in promoting the app, hiring local staff in Nigeria, and collaborating with popular Nigerian social media influencers.

Despite these efforts, LetsChat failed to gain enough traction. The company cited a need to focus resources on “more promising ventures” as the reason for shutting down LetsChat.

Key Points:

  • LetsChat was designed as a data-friendly messaging platform for Africa.
  • ByteDance invested for three years in LetsChat’s success in Africa.
  • The app was removed from app stores in February 2024.
  • LetsChat officially ceased operations on March 23, 2024.
  • ByteDance will focus its resources on other ventures moving forward.

This shutdown highlights the competitive landscape of the messaging app market. Despite its efforts, LetsChat couldn’t compete with more established players in the African market.
